This unit is a culminating learning opportunity of a year-long study, a unit in which students explore the topic of human rights in the context of American Indian history and culture. Designed for elementary students with prior knowledge regarding slavery and the Underground Railroad, students analyze primary sources, including plantation songs, to recognize the hidden messages and gain a deeper understanding of how music served to unify enslaved people.

Title: Message in a Bottle: The Battle of Vicksburg View Details

In this lesson, designed to be embedded within a comprehensive Civil War unit, students analyze a coded message and write a reflection from the perspective of an historical character.  Students utilize the SOAP (Source-Occasion-Audience-Purpose) graphic organizer for analysis and the RAFT (Role-Audience-Format-Topic) writing strategy.

Students then debate what it means to win in war and look at turning points in their own lives to build a better understanding of historic turning points.

Summary:

This lesson is designed for elementary students studying Vermont history, but can be adapted to study schoolhouses in other geographic regions. Students visit local, historic structures – former schoolhouses. They then compare and contrast historic and contemporary photographs, and gather evidence to decide if the images represent the same structure. Students share their conclusions in journals and/or web logs.
